10 Days Trek to Simien Mountains

Day 1 | Gondar to Sankobar

We will depart early morning from Gondar to Debark. In debark we visit the Simien mountains park office and receive a scout and guide then drive into the park to arrive at Sankaber. We either drive all the way in to Sankaber or have the car drop us off near Buyit Ras for a short hike. If you choose to hike in we take a time to savor the beautiful views of the landscape and the endless mountain ridges, and you likely see some gelada baboons. When we arrive at Sankaber which is our first campsite in the Simien mountains, will be met with our camping supplies.

Day 2 | Sankabar to Geech

From Sankaber we begin hiking following the ridge , looking out over the foothills 800m down. From the ridge we descend down into the valley and see the Jinbar River plunging into the Geech Abyss. After some time at the waterfall you ,continue on to Geech village to the second campsite.

Day 3 | Geech to Chennek

After breakfast we start off on a 7-8 hour hike of the best views you will see in the Simien Mountains. In route you will pass through Imet Gogo. Here you will have reached an altitude of 3,926m and be able to look out at the amazing landscape from 360 degrees. At this height and view point we will be able to see the canyon below, distant ridges, and view the seemingly never ending valleys. After Imet Gogo we hike to the view point at Innateye valley at an altitude of 4,070m. Lunch will be here and then we descend to Chennek (3,600m) for oue third campsite.

Day 4 | Chenneck to Ambiko

After breakfast we hike for 2 hours and summit the Buwahit pass (4,200m). From here we can look out towards the next day’s hiking area, Ras Dashen. We follow the path down towards Meseha valley and cross a river and back up again towards Ambiko where we will camp for the night.

Day 5 | Ambiko to Ras Dashen to Ambikoo

The big trek to the peak of Ras Dashen will begin with an early morning walk through the main valley before sunrise. We start ascending the mountain with a steep climb amidst the Giant Lobelia plants. The last part of the hike will likely be very challenging, but very rewarding when you are able to reach the highest point in Ethiopia. At 4,543m you will have amazing views of the immense landscape. After approximately 8-9 hours of hiking for the day we will arrive at Ambiko campsite for the night.

Day 6 | Ambiko (3200 m) - Chennek (3600 m)Walking 7-8 hours

Another long day that takes you back from Ambiko down tothe Meseha River at 2,750m, before ascending again to the small village of Chiroloba , where we will have lancuh then we start clamping up the buwahit pass (4430) and then walk an hour walk down to Chennek camp site stay overnight in Chennek / drive back to Gondar for overnight .

Day 7 | Ambiko to Sona

We hike 9 hours form ambiko down into the Meseha river and up to the Arkwazye village. Here we arrive at the Sona campsite and be able to take in the view of the first portion of the trek.g

Day 8 | Sona to Mekareba

From Sona you we reach a valley called Incya Vally and descend into the lowlands. After lunch swim at the Incya River ,before heading out for another hike along the banks of the river to Mekarbe campsite where you will stay for the night.

Day 9 | Markerba to Mulet

The walk from Markerba to Mulet brings us along the riverbed of the Incya River and provides amazing opportunities to see numerous birds. Pin-tailed waders, village indigo paradise monarchs and tropical bobu can all be spotted here. Lunch break will be at Derkwenth pool where you can have another chance to take a swim before climbing to the Awazza village. Here you can find the spectacular Awazza Table Mountain and then hike to the last campsite at Mulet.

Day 10 | Mulet to Gondar

At Mulet campsite we will have breakfast and take a 3 hour walk to Adi Arkaye where a vehicle will meet us to bring us back to Gondar
